Our verdict on Betway

Betway does the basics well. The sportsbook is easy to use, football and esports markets are deep, odds are competitive on major leagues, and the casino is large wherever casino is legal. In South Africa it is one of the two or three dominant brands, with local payment options that work for players without bank cards. That is why it ranks highly among our sportsbooks.

It is not the best at any single thing. bet365 has the deeper in-play menu and more streaming, UK free bets are restricted to Bet Builders and accumulators, and customer service is the most common complaint in player reviews. Betway is also exposed to regulatory risk in South Africa, where the National Gambling Board says casino-style games offered under bookmaker licences are unlawful. Betway disputes that and holds provincial licences, but the outcome could change what South African players can access.

Ownership, licences and safety

Betway was founded in 2006 and became the main brand of Super Group when the group listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2022. Super Group also owns Spin, which runs casino brands such as Jackpot City. Its results for the second quarter of 2026, published on 4 August, showed revenue of $684m, up 18% year on year, adjusted EBITDA of $204m and 6.2 million monthly active customers. Africa brought in $310m, Europe $132m and the Americas, now essentially Canada after the US exit, $200m. The group raised its 2026 revenue guidance to more than $2.6bn.

Regulatory record

The UK Gambling Commission fined Betway £11.6m in 2020 for social-responsibility and anti-money-laundering failings linked to VIP customers, at the time a record. In 2022 it paid £400,000 after Betway adverts appeared on pages of a football club website aimed at children. Sweden’s regulator has in earlier years fined Betway for repeat bonus offers, which Swedish law limits to the first gaming session. We found no new fines against Betway in our markets in 2026.

Where Betway is available

United Kingdom

Betway is fully licensed in Britain for sports and casino and is one of the best-known football sponsors in the country, with deals with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City as well as the new Manchester United partnership. South Africa

South Africa is Betway’s most important market, and Super Group named it alongside Tanzania as the main drivers of its 36% African revenue growth in the second quarter of 2026. Betway operates under a provincial bookmaker licence. The National Gambling Board’s position, restated on 27 February 2026 and reported again in June, is that online casino games are illegal nationally and that bookmakers offering slot-style or crash games are acting unlawfully. Betway and other bookmakers argue that customers are betting on the outcome of games, which their licences allow. Treasury has also proposed a 20% national tax on online gambling revenue on top of provincial taxes; it was not law when we checked. Our South Africa page tracks the debate.

Germany, Spain and Sweden

In Germany Betway appears on the GGL whitelist for sports betting and virtual slots, with Germany’s €1 spin limit and cross-operator deposit limit. In Spain the DGOJ licenses it for sports, horse racing and casino. In Sweden Betway has been licensed since the market opened in 2019; Swedish rules allow a bonus only at first deposit and require every player to set limits.

Argentina

Betway received a licence from LOTBA, the Buenos Aires City lottery regulator, in 2022 and operates with local partner Bingo Pilar. The licence covers the city only, not Buenos Aires Province, which licenses operators separately. We found no 2026 change to it. See our Argentina page.

Markets Betway has left

Betway pulled out of India in 2023 after the country introduced a 28% tax on deposits, and Super Group completed its exit from the US online market after announcing it in 2025, saying the market did not meet its return-on-capital targets. In January 2026 Portugal’s regulator, SRIJ, revoked Betway’s licences 021 and 022 at the company’s own request; it was not an enforcement action. The UK offer under the 10x wagering cap

Since 19 January 2026 UK operators may not require more than ten times a bonus to be wagered and may not offer bonuses that require play across more than one product. Betway’s sports and casino offers are therefore separate. The £40 free-bet offer is paid as four £10 tokens. Two must be used on Bet Builders with at least four legs at odds of 4.0 or more, and the others on accumulators, so you cannot place them on a single short-priced bet. One 2026 review says the offer requires a debit card deposit, and that PayPal, Revolut or Neteller deposits do not qualify.

South Africa

South African sign-up offers depend on the promo code. The most common pack is an R10 extra bet, 10 bonus spins and 10 free flights on the Aviator crash game. Some codes unlock a 100% first-deposit match up to R1,000 instead, which must be wagered three times at odds of 3.0 or more within 30 days. Sportsbook, esports and casino

Betway’s sportsbook covers all major sports with deep football and cricket markets, and it has long been one of the leading esports books, with Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, League of Legends and Valorant markets, including in-play. Live streaming is available on selected events, but the range is narrower than bet365’s.

Esports is where Betway still stands out from most licensed rivals. It has sponsored esports teams and tournaments for years, and its markets go beyond match winners to map handicaps, totals and player props on the biggest titles. Limits on smaller tournaments are lower than on football, and coverage of minor leagues can be thin, so check the market depth before you plan a bet. For football, Betway prices are generally close to the market on the Premier League and Champions League, with wider margins on lower leagues and props. Comparing a few bookmakers before every bet is still the simplest way to improve your returns.

The casino is a full-sized library with jackpots and a large live-dealer lobby, comparable to casino specialists such as LeoVegas and 888. In South Africa the lobby leans on crash games such as Aviator, numbers draws and Betway’s own games. UK slots are capped at £5 a spin, or £2 for players aged 18 to 24. Payments and withdrawal speed

Withdrawals generally go back to the method you deposited with. Betway does not charge withdrawal fees in the UK, but verification must be complete before any payout.

The main cause of delay is verification. UK players may be asked for photo ID, proof of address and, for larger amounts, source-of-funds documents such as payslips. South African players must complete FICA checks before the first withdrawal, and reviewers note these can slow down during big sporting events. Betway in 2026: what changed

• January 2026: Portugal’s SRIJ revoked Betway’s licences at the company’s request. On 19 January the UK’s 10x wagering cap and mixed-product bonus ban took effect.
• February 2026: South Africa’s National Gambling Board restated that online casino games are illegal nationwide.
• April 2026: UK Remote Gaming Duty on online casino rose from 21% to 40%. Remote betting duty on most sports bets rises from 15% to 25% in April 2027.
• August 2026: Super Group reported record second-quarter results and announced Betway as Manchester United’s principal partner and exclusive global betting partner from 2026/27, its biggest sponsorship to date, reported to be worth more than £18m.
• 2026/27 season: Premier League clubs’ front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship ban began, so Betway’s United branding appears on training kit and around Old Trafford rather than on match shirts.

For UK players, the 40% duty is likely to keep casino promotions modest. For South African players, the NGB dispute and the proposed national tax are the two developments to watch.

What players say

Betway’s UK Trustpilot page showed a score of 1.2 out of 5 from about 18,650 reviews in October 2026. The distribution is polarised: 47% one-star and 37% five-star. Complaints focus on the chatbot and long waits for a human agent, withdrawals held for document checks, accounts reviewed after wins, and promised free bets not appearing. Betway replied to about 35% of negative reviews, usually within a day.

Trustpilot does not verify reviews, and complaints about verification often reflect checks that UK and South African rules require. Practical steps help: verify your account before you need to withdraw, keep your deposit and withdrawal method the same, and screenshot the terms of any offer you claim.
