Key takeaways
  • Your casino balance is an entry in the casino’s ledger, backed by coins in wallets the casino controls. Withdraw what you do not need.
  • Casinos keep most reserves in cold storage and pay out from hot wallets. Hot-wallet hacks hit BC.Game and Duelbits in 2026 and Stake in 2023.
  • Payment rails now range from on-chain Bitcoin to Lightning and stablecoins on cheap networks. Coin and network must always match.
  • Provably fair originals can be verified bet by bet; third-party slots rely on lab-certified RNGs instead.
  • Most crypto casinos hold offshore licences. Curaçao tightened its crypto rules in June 2026, and its online portal was taken offline after a September 2026 security incident.

What makes a casino a “Bitcoin casino”

A Bitcoin or crypto casino is an online casino that accepts cryptocurrency for deposits and withdrawals. Some also take cards or bank transfers; crypto-first sites often accept only coins, sometimes with a built-in option to buy crypto through a payment partner. Most now accept far more than Bitcoin: stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, Ethereum, Solana, Litecoin and others.

The games are largely the same as at any online casino: slots and live dealer tables from established studios, plus a category that is mostly unique to crypto sites, in-house “originals” such as dice, crash, plinko, mines and limbo. Many also run a sportsbook on the same balance. Our crypto sports betting guide covers that side, and our crypto casino rankings compare the operators we review.

The real differences are underneath: who holds the money, how it moves, what the licence covers and what protections you have if something goes wrong.

Wallets: who actually holds your coins

When you deposit, your coins leave your wallet and arrive at an address the casino controls. From then on, your “balance” is a number in the casino’s database. The coins backing it sit in the casino’s own wallets, usually pooled with every other player’s funds. This is called custody, and it is the single most important thing to understand about any crypto casino.

Hot and cold storage

Casinos split their reserves between two kinds of wallet:

  • Hot wallets are connected to the internet and controlled by software, so they can sign withdrawals automatically. They make instant payouts possible, but their private keys are exposed to attack.
  • Cold wallets keep private keys offline, often in hardware devices or multi-signature setups that need several people to approve a transfer. They are much harder to steal from but slow to move.
  • Deposit addresses are usually generated per player or per transaction and swept periodically into the operator’s main wallets.

A well-run casino keeps only a small working float in hot wallets and tops them up from cold storage as needed. If a hot wallet is drained, the operator should be able to cover player balances from its reserves. Whether it can depends on the size of those reserves, which players almost never get to see.

Publicly reported hot-wallet and platform losses at crypto casinos
WhenCasinoReported lossWhat was reported
September 2023StakeAbout $41.3 millionETH, BSC and Polygon hot wallets drained; the FBI attributed the theft to North Korea’s Lazarus Group. Stake said player funds were safe and resumed withdrawals.
March 2026BC.GameAbout $4.33 millionAn attacker exploited a vulnerability in a third-party game. BC.Game published the wallet address and offered a $500,000 bounty.
September 2026DuelbitsAbout $7 million, plus 8.1 BTCHot wallets on Ethereum, BNB Chain, TRON and Bitcoin drained. The site went offline; the co-founder said user funds were safe. The cause had not been confirmed when reported.
The practical rule

Treat a casino balance like cash left on a shop counter: fine for what you are using now, unwise for savings. Withdraw winnings to a wallet you control, and keep only your session budget on any casino.

Deposits: from your wallet to theirs

The cashier gives you a deposit address for your chosen coin and network, or a Lightning invoice for Bitcoin. You send from any wallet or exchange, and the casino credits your balance once it sees enough confirmations on the blockchain.

  1. Choose the coin in the cashier, then choose the network. USDT on TRON and USDT on Ethereum are different tokens on different ledgers.
  2. Copy the address with the copy button or scan the QR code. Never type it by hand.
  3. If the cashier shows a memo, tag or destination tag (common for XRP, TON and some exchanges), include it. Without it the deposit may not be credited automatically.
  4. Check the minimum deposit. Amounts below it may be lost or need manual recovery.
  5. Send a small test amount first if this is a new casino, network or wallet.
  6. Wait for the confirmations the cashier asks for. Your balance appears once they are reached.

Confirmation times depend on the network. Bitcoin adds a new block about every 10 minutes on average, with no guaranteed minimum or maximum, and a low fee can delay the first confirmation considerably. Networks such as Solana and TRON confirm in seconds. Lightning payments settle almost instantly because they do not wait for a block at all.

Your balance: coin or dollars?

Many casinos display balances in dollars even when you deposit Bitcoin. Some hold your actual coins; others convert to a dollar value on arrival and convert back at withdrawal. The difference decides who carries the price risk while you play, and it is often buried in the cashier terms.

Worked example: price risk on a Bitcoin balance

You deposit 0.01 BTC when Bitcoin is priced at $60,000, so $600. If your balance stays in BTC and the price falls 10% while you play, your balance is worth $540 before a single bet is settled. If the casino converted to a fixed dollar value on arrival, it is still $600, but a price rise would not benefit you either. These prices are illustrative; the arithmetic holds at any price.

This is why stablecoins have become the default for many players. Our USDT casino guide covers networks and fees in depth, and our step-by-step guide walks through a first deposit from buying coins to a test withdrawal.

Payment rails: on-chain, Lightning and stablecoins

In 2026 a crypto casino cashier typically offers three families of payment rail. Each has different speed, cost and risk trade-offs.

Common payment rails at crypto casinos
RailHow it worksSpeedMain trade-off
On-chain BitcoinA normal Bitcoin transaction recorded in a blockAbout 10 minutes per block on average, longer if fees are lowFees rise when the network is busy; price volatility
Bitcoin LightningPayments routed through channels anchored to Bitcoin, paid by invoiceSecondsNot every casino supports it; invoices expire; routing can fail on large amounts
Stablecoins on fast networksUSDT or USDC on TRON, Solana, TON and similarSeconds to a minute or twoIssuer can freeze addresses; network must match exactly
Stablecoins on EthereumUSDT or USDC as ERC-20 tokensUsually minutesFees can be higher; same 0x address format as several other networks
Other coins (ETH, LTC, SOL and more)Native transfers on each chainSeconds to minutesPrice volatility; per-coin minimums

Lightning is a payment network built on top of Bitcoin. Users open channels anchored on the blockchain, and payments hop between channels off-chain, so settlement is near instant and cheap. The casino issues an invoice for a specific amount; your wallet pays it. Most casinos use a payment processor to handle Lightning rather than running their own nodes.

Stablecoins are increasingly shaped by regulation. In the United States, the GENIUS Act was signed in July 2025, and Treasury opened consultation on its implementing rules in August 2026, with the Act expected to take effect in January 2027. In the EU, the MiCA transitional period ended on 1 July 2026, so only authorised crypto-asset service providers can now serve EU clients. Neither law regulates offshore casinos directly, but both affect which exchanges and stablecoins you can use to get funds in and out. Curaçao’s June 2026 crypto guideline also says licensees should favour fiat-backed stablecoins and may exclude privacy coins, meme tokens and wrapped tokens of unclear origin.

The most common costly mistake

Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon and several other networks all use addresses starting with 0x. Your wallet will not stop you sending USDT on the wrong one. If the casino does not support that network, the funds may be unrecoverable. Match the network every time.

Withdrawals: where crypto beats card casinos

Card and bank withdrawals pass through payment processors, banks and review queues, and often take one to five days. A crypto withdrawal is a single blockchain transaction from the casino’s hot wallet to your address. When approval is automated, coins can arrive within minutes, or seconds on Lightning and fast networks.

Every withdrawal still passes through the casino’s own checks first: whether the bonus terms are met, whether the account is flagged for review, whether the amount exceeds automatic limits, and increasingly whether the destination wallet passes blockchain screening. Those internal steps, not the blockchain, explain almost every slow payout.

  • Pending period: some casinos hold withdrawals for a set time, sometimes letting you reverse them. Treat that as a red flag for impulse control.
  • Limits: daily, weekly or monthly caps, sometimes tied to VIP level.
  • Fees: some casinos pass on network fees; others absorb them. Check before choosing a network.
  • Verification triggers: large withdrawals or unusual patterns can prompt identity or source-of-funds checks.

Our instant withdrawal guide explains how to test a casino’s payout speed with a small amount, and our deposits and withdrawals guide covers limits and fees across payment methods.

Provably fair versus certified RNG

Crypto casinos offer two kinds of fairness assurance, and it helps to know which applies to the game in front of you.

Provably fair originals

Before you bet, the casino commits to a secret server seed by showing you its cryptographic hash. You set a client seed of your own, and each bet increments a counter called a nonce. The result is calculated from all three. When you rotate seeds, the casino reveals the old server seed, and you can check that it matches the hash and reproduces every result. Because the hash was published first, the casino could not have changed the seed after seeing your bets.

Provably fair does not lower the house edge. It proves the results followed the published method, and lets you confirm the payout table matches the stated edge. Our provably fair guide walks through a full verification.

Certified RNG for third-party games

Slots and most table games from established studios run on the studio’s servers using random number generators. Their fairness rests on certification: independent labs test the RNG and maths model against technical standards, such as GLI-19 for online gaming systems, and each RTP version is certified separately. You cannot verify an individual spin, but you are relying on a studio whose licences in regulated markets depend on that certification.

Both types still carry a built-in cost. Our RTP guide explains how to compare that cost across games and why the same slot can run at different settings at different casinos.

Licensing and regulation in 2026

Most crypto casinos are licensed offshore rather than by the regulator in your country. Curaçao remains the most common jurisdiction, with Anjouan in the Comoros a growing alternative, and a handful hold licences elsewhere. An offshore licence sets rules on anti-money-laundering, game fairness and complaints, but gives far weaker player protection than a national regulator in a regulated market.

Curaçao after the LOK reform

Curaçao’s National Ordinance on Games of Chance, known as the LOK, took effect in December 2024. It ended the old master-licence and sublicence model and moved all online licences directly under the Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA), with a public licence register and per-domain certificates. Through 2026 the CGA has added obligations on top:

  • Crypto guideline (June 2026): licensees may accept crypto only as payment for gambling, not act as exchanges or custodians; must screen wallets at deposit and withdrawal with blockchain analytics; must keep player, operational and treasury wallets separate; and must refuse funds linked to mixers or sanctioned addresses. A crypto policy was due within three months, with full technical compliance by mid-2027.
  • Portal incident (September 2026): on 17 September the CGA said it had identified and contained unauthorised access to its online gaming portal, with the scope still under investigation.
  • Platform change (October 2026): on 7 October the CGA said the portal would not return to service. Existing licences remain valid, but the digital seal operators display is affected, and the regulator said it would introduce an alternative way to prove a domain is licensed.
Checking a licence right now

Do not rely on a licence badge in a casino’s footer, especially while Curaçao’s seal system is being replaced. Go to the regulator’s own website directly, search the licence register for the operator, and check that the licensed company and the approved domain match the site you are using. Our licence guide explains each step.

Your own country’s rules

An offshore licence does not make a casino legal where you live. Most offshore casinos block countries where they are not permitted, and their terms usually allow them to void winnings if you play from a restricted location. Never use a VPN or false details to get around a block. National rules also move fast: Brazil, for example, moved in September 2026 to prohibit fixed-odds betting and online casino games, including offshore sites, with legal challenges pending. Our coverage page and market pages such as Brazil track what applies where.

KYC and anti-money-laundering checks

Many crypto casinos let you sign up with an email address and play without uploading documents. That does not mean there are no checks. Identity verification (KYC) is usually triggered by withdrawal thresholds, large or unusual activity, bonus abuse reviews or a regulator’s request. Our no-KYC guide explains when checks still apply.

The checks that have grown fastest are the ones you do not see. Under Curaçao’s 2026 guideline, licensees must screen the wallets you deposit from and withdraw to, assign risk scores and monitor transactions using blockchain analytics. Funds traced to mixers, sanctioned addresses or stolen coins can be frozen or refused, even if you received them innocently.

The exchanges you use to buy and sell crypto face stricter rules still. The Financial Action Task Force’s July 2026 update reported that 83% of the jurisdictions it surveyed had passed laws implementing the Travel Rule, which requires crypto service providers to pass sender and recipient details along with transfers. In practice, your exchange may ask who owns the wallet you are withdrawing to, or flag transfers to and from gambling sites.

  • Deposit from a wallet you control and can prove is yours.
  • Avoid coins from mixers, peer-to-peer trades with strangers or unknown sources.
  • Keep records of deposits and withdrawals; you may need them for checks or tax.
  • Expect identity checks before large withdrawals and complete them promptly.
  • If you would never pass a check, do not deposit large amounts there in the first place.

How crypto casinos make money

A crypto casino earns money the same way any casino does: through the house edge. Its revenue, called gross gaming revenue (GGR), is the total staked minus the total paid out. Over large volumes, GGR converges on turnover multiplied by the average edge of the games played.

Worked example: where the margin comes from

Players stake $1,000,000 in a month on slots averaging 96% RTP. Expected GGR is $1,000,000 × 4% = $40,000. If the same $1,000,000 is staked on dice with a 1% edge, expected GGR is $10,000. If the casino then pays 10% of the edge back as rakeback on the dice volume, it returns $1,000 and keeps $9,000.

A sportsbook earns through the margin built into its odds. If both sides of a 50/50 match are priced at 1.91, a $100 bet returns $191 half the time, so the average return is $95.50 and the bookmaker’s edge is 4.5%. Our odds guide shows how to calculate margins on any market.

Out of GGR the operator pays game studios, payment processors, blockchain analytics, licensing, staff, marketing, affiliate commissions and the bonuses, rakeback and VIP rewards it gives back to players. Rewards are a real return of part of the edge, which is why our rakeback guide treats them as a price cut rather than free money.

Because the edge works on turnover, the most valuable customers to a casino are those who play often and fast. Features like auto-bet, instant rebets and continuous VIP progress all increase turnover. Knowing that helps you spot when the design is nudging you to play more.

ReversalsNone: blockchain payments are finalCard chargebacks possible in some cases

Neither model is simply better. Crypto casinos win on speed, privacy and game choice; regulated casinos win on protection and recourse. Which matters more depends on where you live, how much you play and how much you trust the operator. Regulated options in your market are listed on our casinos page.

Risks and red flags

  • Irreversible payments. A wrong address or network cannot be undone. Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed once confirmed.
  • Custody and hacks. A casino can be hacked, go offline or become insolvent. Withdraw winnings regularly.
  • Volatility. Non-stable coins can lose value while sitting in your balance.
  • Frozen funds. Coins linked to mixers or sanctioned addresses can be refused, and stablecoin issuers can freeze addresses.
  • Weak recourse. Offshore complaint routes are slower and less effective than a national regulator.
  • Fewer safety nets. National self-exclusion schemes generally do not cover offshore casinos.
  • Restricted countries. Playing from a blocked location can cost you your winnings.
Warning signs before you deposit

Be cautious of casinos with no verifiable licence, withdrawal terms that allow unlimited “security reviews”, maximum withdrawal caps far below advertised wins, bonus terms that change after you deposit, or support that cannot say which wallet network a payout will use.

Crypto makes gambling fast and frictionless, which is also what makes it easy to overspend. Set a budget before you start, use the casino’s deposit limits and cooling-off tools, and see our responsible gambling guide and support hub if play stops feeling like entertainment.

Checklist for your first crypto casino

  1. Check that online gambling is permitted where you live and that the casino accepts players from your country.
  2. Verify the licence on the regulator’s own site, not via the casino’s badge.
  3. Read the withdrawal terms: limits, fees, pending periods and verification triggers.
  4. Pick a coin and network you understand, ideally a stablecoin on a cheap network.
  5. Make a small test deposit, then a small test withdrawal, before depositing more.
  6. Check each game’s RTP before playing and prefer provably fair originals if you want to verify results.
  7. Set deposit and time limits on day one.
  8. Withdraw winnings to your own wallet rather than leaving them on the site.
